New contract for ITER-DMS cryogenic pellets

The DSBT has just signed a new contract with the ITER Organization to continue designing cryogenic pellets injectors for high-energy plasma disruption mitigation (Disruption Mitigation System - DMS).

This new contract follows an initial 3-year contract with ITER dedicated to demonstrating our department's know-how in the formation and acceleration of large cryogenic pellets (d 3cm x L 6cm). Having successfully met ITER's initial objectives of forming hydrogen pellets in less than 30 minutes and accelerating them to 500 m/s, the DSBT need to carry out a feasibility study for a new cryogenic pellets injector that meets ITER's operating and integration constraints.

This technological work is based on numerical simulations and is accompanied by exploratory work, carried out as part of a PTC Instrumentation project, to characterize the mechanical properties of cryogenic pellets by observing their impact on a target.
